President’s Letter December 2020
Happy Holidays! This is my favorite time of year. My family enjoys many holiday traditions including making cookies and candy, driving around to look at lights, and eating Chinese take-out, picnic-style by the tree. Although it will look different in many ways, I hope everyone can find the joy and excitement that the holidays bring.
While we didn’t get to host the Fall Workshop, it was great to see and hear many of you at the Virtual Summit in October. We had representation from ## states! The workshop provided an excellent opportunity to discuss current issues and exchange ideas. I also think the topics highlighted a few areas where NASASPS can provide additional content via future professional development opportunities. I hope you also found value in the recent webinar from Dr. Sharron Bob and the quarterly regulator call with the U.S. Department of Education. Hopefully, in the future, we can host in-person conferences and meetings, but until then, we look forward to providing additional content virtually.
Board of Directors Update: Board member, Dr. Michael Marion, transitioned from his position with the California Bureau of Private and Postsecondary Education to the U.S. Department of Education.
Dr. Marion brought a great deal of insight and forward-thinking that has and will continue to guide NASASPS. We thank Dr. Marion for his service and wish him the very best! The Board appointed Sam Loftin to complete Dr. Marion’s term on the Board of Directors. Sam is the Director of Consumer Protection for the Washington Student Achievement Council. In his current role, Sam provides leadership and oversight of state authorization for degree-granting institutions operating in Washington State. He also manages the approval of distance education programs for Washington institutions participating in interstate reciprocity agreements and is responsible for agency efforts related to student loan debt relief. He previously practiced public interest law and has over a decade of experience as a community college instructor and administrative leader. Sam has a B.A. from Louisiana State University, a J.D. from the University of Tennessee College of Law, and M.A. and M.Ed. degrees from Oregon State University.
We welcome Sam and look forward to working with him!
There will be another Board position available in April. Please let us know if you are interested in serving on the Board. If you have any questions or would like to connect with me, please feel free to contact me by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
All the best!
