President’s Letter – May 2018

NASASPS Quarterly, Volume 7
May 2018

Greetings NASASPS Members,

While many of you are (hopefully) sliding into the relative quiet of summer, NASASPS staff and board members are taking a welcome break after the whirlwind of annual conference planning and implementation. For those of you who joined us in Portland, I hope you agree that the conference went smoothly and that you took away plenty of useful information. From Sharon Bob’s always-entertaining and chock-full-of-information federal update, to a thought-provoking and conversation-stimulating Wednesday morning presentation from Western Governors University, we hope you enjoyed the content. Don’t forget that session presentations are available on the website. Included are the remarks made by our newest honorary members, Bernell Cochran and Merlin Anderson, who provided attendees with recollections of NASASPS’ origins. Links to additional remarks and history have also been included on the conference page. Board members have thoughtfully reviewed survey responses to file away ideas for session topics and improvements for next year. As a reminder, the 2019 Annual Conference will be held April 14-17 in Jacksonville, FL.

At the conference, the board launched several committees that will address issues faced by state regulators- evaluating distance education institutions and programs, providing responses to proposed policies or federal regulations, and handling multi-state school closures. These committees were not only born out of regulator need but also in support of the recently released NASASPS Strategic Plan (which members can access using a link in the newsletter).

The board will use this summer to continue work on its committees, begin planning for the Fall Workshop for Regulators, and implementing aspects of its strategic plan. Hopefully with a vacation squeezed in! Enjoy your summer.

Sincerely,
Lane Goodwin
NASASPS President
